Survival The COVID Years Ilana Estelle
Paperback published by RedDoor Press 1st December 2022
Ilana Estelle was forty-six when she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and then ten years later, she was diagnosed with autism. The journey from angry, confused child to the real her took enormous inner strength and courage. Then the global pandemic struck.
In Survival The Covid Years Ilana shares her overwhelming physical and mental struggles with the chaos of the pandemic. She explains how navigating the daly turbulence and ever-changing rules and restrictions impacted her physical, mental, and emotional needs, leaving her feeling out of control and panicked.
Locked down and fearing for her health, and even her life, Illana turned once again to writing, a process that helped her cope and reach out beyond life with four walls. Her revealing memoir shows how she learned to cope with stress, anxiety, and on-going self-isolation through Covid, through the healing powers of words and with a steely determination to reconnect to the outside world.
MY REVIEW
The pandemic during lockdown affected a lot of people, but mostly it effected the vulnerable, specially with underline conditions.
Ilana Estelle was one of those people that were classed as vulnerable because she has cerebral palsy and in January 2019 aged 56, Ilana was diagnosed with autism. Because she suffered from cerebral palsy Illana was at high risk of catching coronavirus so the NHS advised her to self isolate immediately.
Ilana suffered mental and emotional disability and an anxiety disorder through the pandemic.
The one thing that got Illana through the lockdown was to write a blog The CP Diary, about her disability, and sharing her experiences with others. That blog helped her find her voice. But never did Ilana imagine that she would be writing about a virus that would effect her life.
For many reasons Ilana found a way to help her by writing a letter to herself and set within in this special book is the letter Illana wrote to herself. Ilana takes the reader through he journey of what lockdown actually meant for her. One of my favourite chapters was The Spirituality Concept.
I completely understand how important it is for bloggers to share their experiences, to be open about how they are feeling, and what you are going through with other bloggers. People out there that are going through the same situations as you. It can become a great way of meeting other people, and some bloggers will offer support, advice and comfort.
About author Ilana Estelle

Ilana was born with a disability she didn’t know she had until the age of 46, when through her medical notes she discovered she had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of 2.
That discovery turned out to be a unique and life-changing experience that has forced Ilana to stand back and look at her life experiences differently. On her late diagnosis, Ilana set up her website The CP Diary and uses her experiences to explore her emotional and physical health, with an inspiring message advocating resilience and change.
Ilana likes to spend her days writing and blogging about anything that contributes to her health and wellbeing.
She is an animal advocate and is passionate about environmental issues. When she is not writing to tending to her blog, Ilana enjoys days out exploring the Yorkshire countryside.
Ilana lives with her husband and their much-loved cat, in Yorkshire. Her grown up son and daughter both live in London.
