Paperback published by Bonnier Books 12th September 2024

In Talking with Psychopaths and Savages:Guilty But Insane, criminologist Christopher Berry-Dee turns his cool, forensic eye on killers who have deployed the insanity defence at their trials for murder, whether because they were genuinely insane, or to try to avoid a harsher sentence which, in many countries, may still include the death penalty.

MY REVIEW

It’s not often that I get to read true murders, that have taken place and been written about. But I have read another book by this criminologists Christopher Berry-Dee, so I wanted to read another of his books. There’s always that one murder case that sticks in my brain, I expect you are the same? In this particular book Talking with Psychopaths and savages, Guilty But Insane, I was in gasp about, a forty-seven-year-old housekeeper Noreen O’Connor who murdered an elderly German-born Jungfer spinster Friederika Marie Buls, by plucking out her eyes. In my view something wasn’t quite right with housekeeper Noreen, in her brain, for she gave the police the reason why she did what she did, to Marie, is because Marie Buls had an evil look in her eyes. Noreen claimed that she had not killed the spinster Marie Buls, but only the evil in her eyes, where Noreen had to get the evil in Marie’s eyes out.
